Do toe separators work for bunions? | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | 08-18-2008, 01:06 AM | #1 | KyleG Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2006 Posts: 180 | Do toe separators work for bunions? I have flat feet and I have bunions on both my feet. My right foot has it worse though. I am too young to have surgery on it. My mom bought me these gel toe separators to put in between my big toe thinking that since I am still growing it will straighten out if I keep wearing them. I found that using one separator didn't seem like it moved my toe that much so I use a pair of them for both feet on the big toe. I wear them when I am in the house or when I am sleeping. Does using these help at all? Has anyone had any success with using them? I've read that you can get a bunion on the bone by your pinky toe too. Sometimes I can kind of feel a little bit of discomfort or pain in that area too. My pinky toes on both my feet seem to be kind of smooshed into the toe next to it and is slightly underneath that toe. Do you think I should put separators between those toes as well? |

They do no prevent a bunion from forming or getting worse. The bunion by the pinky toe is called a tailor bunion. I've never seen toe seperators that would work good with those since the ones out there would be too big. Why did they say you were too young for surgery? I was 16 when I had my first bunion surgery (tailor bunion- right foot).. then I had the tailor bunion on my left foot removed when I was 18. Many years later at 30, they were both successful surgeries and the bunions have not returned. I guess if you are young enough they might want to wait until you are fully grown before operating (as I don't know your age) I didn't have problems with the bunions on my big toes until later. Had the left foot operated on 3 years ago and I'm about to get the 4th and final bunion on my right foot surgically operated on in January. Last edited by wakkochic17; 08-18-2008 at 10:26 AM. |

I am 16 and I would need to wait until I have fully grown before I can consider doing an operation. Besides the toe separators what else can I do to help my bunions? Any different products out there that people use? |

There is an item called Yoga Toes that is supposed to help. If I were younger I think I would have tried that before having surgery but my bunions and all were already there and surgery scheduled when I saw them. They say not to over do it in the begining or you can get tendonitis from wearing it. But a slow and steady build up should work. Hope you can put off the whole surgery thing and find a way to beat it. Huffle |

I bought something similar to those Yoga toes except it was made out of foam or something and it was straight not curved and had holes for your toes. Unfortunetly, it didn't fit. I couldn't get my pinky toe into the hole so it was just a waste. |

A podiatrist/orthopeadic doctor? As I mentioned I was 16 with my first surgery so I know you can get it done that young. Did it on summer break to not mess with the school year. btw.. Yoga Toes are good but they won't prevent bunions from getting worse.. I've had a pair for a year and my right foot is worse then ever. They do make your toes feel nice though! |

From what I've read on the message board, the majority of the people who've had the surgery regret and say that it has made it even worse so I am uncertain about it. |

However, the people who come to this board and stay here are the worst cases. The ones who had bunion surgery and had a good recovery are out having fun, and not here. Look up the specific probabilities of different outcomes for your particular procedure. Ask the doctor lots of questions. Keep in mind that the things you read about on this board could happen to you, but also keep in mind that doctors have taken an oath to do no harm. If bunion surgery didn't help most patients in the long run, doctors wouldn't do it, and you can be sure insurance companies wouldn't pay for it. I don't know if a bunionectomy is right for you, but I want you to make choices based on fair and balanced information. |

Most of the people who post here are do so for support because they are either in the process of recovering or having complications. But there are plenty of us out here that have had good experiences and living happy, pain-free lives. When I started here I had already scheduled my surgery and there were some very negative stories that I had been reading in the weeks leading up to my surgery. You just have to remember every single person and surgery is different. You just never know how you're going to heal. But, if you choose to have the surgery eventually, know that there ARE MANY good, successful stories out there! |

Hi Wakkochic17 Out of curiosity, how would you describe a tailor bunion surgery compared to a regular bunion? What was the recovery like? And was there hardware involved? I might have to have this down the road. Bunion surgery was painful, but the recovery was harder than I expected (not driving and being limited). Thanks Prisc1125 |

Thanks Prisc1125 it was definitely easier. The pain right after surgery was similar with swelling and all, but it was a much faster recovery. My doctor used removeable pins, but some may use screws. Probably between the bone being smaller and less pressure is put on that part of the foot and joint when walking, helps things heal easier. I had the pins in for 3 weeks and then it took about a week of getting used to walking again. Then just had to wait for swelling to go down and tenderness to go away to get into regular shoes again. I had both my surgeries in warm months so velcro sandals were my friend. |
