Mahomes Targeting Third Super Bowl Ring

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been a phenom since becoming the Kansas City Chiefs’ starting quarterback in 2018. In five seasons as the full-time starter, Mahomes is a five-time Pro Bowler, two-time MVP, two-time Super Bowl champion, and two-time Super Bowl MVP. Few players experienced this kind of success early in their careers. Mahomes has already become an all-time great and could continue to climb the ranks in the upcoming years.

In the 2023 season, Mahomes will go for his third Super Bowl ring. NFL odds have the Chiefs as the favorite to win Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas (+650). If Mahomes raises the Lombardi Trophy once again, he can write history. Where would he rank among the youngest quarterbacks to win three Super Bowls?

Five QBs Create Elite Company

If Mahomes can win a third Super Bowl at any point in his career, he would join an elite company. Five quarterbacks have won three Super Bowls. Check out the list:

  • Tom Brady – Seven Super Bowls
  • Joe Montana – Four Super Bowls
  • Terry Bradshaw – Four Super Bowls
  • Troy Aikman – Three Super Bowls
  • Earl Morrall – Three Super Bowls

First, can we acknowledge how ridiculous Brady is? It’s still difficult to comprehend he won seven rings. That’s why he’s the GOAT. Montana, Bradshaw, and Aikman are not surprised as Hall of Fame signal-callers. However, Earl Morrall stands out as an outlier.

Morrall could have an asterisk next to his Super Bowl rings. He is perhaps the best backup QB of all time. He replaced an injured Johnny Unitas in Super Bowl 5, leading the Baltimore Colts to a 16-13 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Morrall joined the Miami Dolphins and was a part of their back-to-back Super Bowl run in 1972 and 1973. Morrall played a big role in 1972 when Bob Griese was injured in Week 5. The backup led Miami to 11 consecutive wins. Griese returned in the second half of the AFC Championship game and started in Super Bowl 7. Morrall only played in one Super Bowl win but was a quality backup on all three championship-winning teams.

Brady’s Record is Safe

Among the five quarterbacks to win three Super Bowls, Brady was the youngest to accomplish the feat at 27. Aikman is the second-youngest at 29. Montana (32), Bradshaw (30), and Morrall (39) were in their 30s.

Mahomes will turn 28 in Sept., meaning he cannot become the youngest signal-caller to win three Super Bowls. Brady’s record is safe and sound. If Kansas City wins its second consecutive Super Bowl, Mahomes would pass Aikman to become the second-youngest QB to win three rings.

Chasing Brady’s feats could be one of the major storylines of Mahomes’ career. Will Mahomes become the second-youngest quarterback to win three Super Bowls in the 2023 season?
